Saruman - lord of the rings by monkeezgob Saruman - lord of the rings by monkeezgob
Christopher Lee as Saruman from the Peter Jackson Lord of the rings trilogy.

This was a privately commissioned work, it's a little rough, but I thought I'd display it here. Done with Painter.

Did you seriously think a hobbit could contend the power of Sauron?

This is a really lovely style, I thought it was an oil painting at first! I wish I could capture this...oil painty-ness digitally!

Fantastic piece! Well done. ;) I think I might try out this "Painter" program you all are talking about. I prefer a heavier brushstroke look myself. How does it compare to Photoshop? Sorry if that's a silly question, I'm just not familiar with the program at all.

Hi Sulla
It's similar to Photoshop, Photoshop has incorporated many of Painters features in the last few versions. I just prefer painter, for me it just feels more like actually pianting with brush and canvas than Photoshop. I do use photoshop for photographic manipulation, but I use Painter to actually draw and paint images.

Ah I see. Thanks for the reply, I might give it a try and check it out. It doesn't matter what filters or brushes I use in photoshop, I just can't get that natural painted look. Close, but something's missing.

Thanks very much. Christopher Lee has a wonderfully textured face, which the make-up only enhanced, so it was fun to do.

It looks smooth in the smaller view, but I prefer it in the larger view showing the brush strokes, etc.

Yes, that's generally the effect my work has. I'm quite loose when I work, so up close you can see the brush strokes, but from far away the effect is diminished. Even though I work digitally, I still like my paintings to look like paintings, rather than being completely smooth and perfect.

I'm still learning with Painter. I like the painting effects you can do with it. I love pastels and pencils so I abuse my digital blender. I've kept the brush strokes when working from photos, I'll experiment with it more.

Painter is wonderful; I don't think I'll ever get to the stage where I cna claim I've mastered it, but it's always fun to leanr new things.
